september 29, 2021 - tokonama (oncidium orchids, shogun heliconias, rosehips) for neutra vdl house. photos by erik benjamins.
“escher gunewardena; tokonama for the neutra vdl house, 2021; pine plywood, pine post, metallic paint; 75.8 × 38.3 × 6.0 in.; post, 64.4 inches in height. edition of 5, custom-made to architectural context.
sized approximately to the dimensions of a traditional tatami mat and referencing neutra’s travel to japan in 1930, just prior to the construction of the vdl house (1932), architecture practice escher gunewardena have activated the wanting void beneath the cantilevered staircase and have installed an adapted version of a tokonama and accompanying toko-bashira (or pillar, here treated in silver paint as generally favored by neutra to dematerialize vertical elements, but used here instead to accentuate the object and its thinly-veiled wood-ness). tokonama are built-in elements of many traditional and contemporary japanese homes, and commonly act as an alcove for the display of art objects and / or plantlife. accordingly, gunewardena has crafted an ikebana arrangement making use of local flora*, energizing this under-utilized under-stair cavity that is loosely defined by the circular light diffuser and spotlight seen at left. the overall gesture is at once generous, activating, and unassuming, feeling much as though it has always been there or always belonged.” words from marta.
curated by marta and erik benjamins - ‘built in’ is a group exhibition of new, site-specific works from 32 los angeles-area creative practices at the vdl house. on view from september 18 to november 07, 2021.
canary test “wilt” part iii / sept. 19-21, 2023.
